Cats Fishing started in April 2024 as a stylized Unity fishing game about cats. I founded it and ran it. For most of its life it was a studio project: from April 2024 to April 2026 a team of outside developers built the client, the backend and the cloud setup, while my job was direction. I wrote the game docs, owned the design and decided what we built. The code from that stretch is theirs, and I’m happy to say so.

Then it forked. In late 2025 the team took the same project off in a multiplayer direction, which became Mindscape. When that wound down in spring 2026, I went back and pulled the pure fishing game out on its own since we had it working prety well.

From June to September 2026 I picked it up: 109 commits in the Unity client and 86 in the API, and by August and September I was alone still going. I started with a nice design bible: 25 species, 45 spawn rules, a 20-item gear catalogue and 10 brands. I made the server decide the whole catch (which fish, how heavy, the XP and the payout), moved hosting off AWS onto Railway, stripped out the old crypto wallet, and rebuilt the HUD and menus as 19 new screens all in the spirit of RF4 and where my inspiration started for trying this in Unreal.

It’s not shipped yet of course, but it boots, signs you in and drops you at the lake in Whisker Woods run around, and the fishing actually feels like fishing. It’s sweet.
